Funding Secured to Preserve Penley’s Polish Heritage
The Rainbow Foundation is proud to announce that it has secured £153,000 in funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to deliver a landmark cultural initiative: Polish Heritage Penley – “Polska Penley, Preserving a Legacy.” This three-year project will honour, celebrate, and safeguard the rich Polish heritage rooted in Penley, North Wales.
Project Manager Rebecca Griffiths says “Penley was once known as “Little Poland,” home to one of the UK’s largest Polish resettlement camps following World War II. The village became a sanctuary for displaced Polish individuals under the Resettlement Act of 1947, which was introduced both to recognise the vital contribution of the Allied Polish forces in securing victory and to provide support for Polish women and children who had been displaced by the war. Today, people from around the world trace their roots back to Penley, yet much of this unique history is at risk of being forgotten.
The new project will ensure the long-term preservation and celebration of Penley’s Polish legacy. It will build on the existing Polish Memorial Garden and introduce a range of activities, including the development of a heritage walking tour, collection of oral histories, photographs and personal memorabilia, hosting of cultural workshops and festivals. A permanent exhibition will be established in the village, while the walking tour will highlight key historical sites, including the Polish graves.
The project will also develop a digital archive and a virtual exhibition, ensuring that Penley’s Polish heritage remains accessible to future generations and to audiences around the world. These resources will create exciting opportunities for schools and the wider community to engage with the history, take part in volunteering, and play an active role in heritage and the wider project activities.
The Rainbow Foundation has already have received strong support for the project from: The Polish Consulate in Manchester , Wrexham University, Wrexham Museum, The Maelor School Penley, Preserve Penley Hospital, St Mary Magdalene Church, The People’s Collection Wales, Penley Village Hall, Whitchurch Heritage Centre, The Chester & Borders Polish Society, The Mealor South Community Council, The Madras School, Iscoyd Park Estate and The Polish History Society. And look forward to continuing to work with all their supporters over the next three years to bring this important project to life.
Rebecca adds: “As we approach the 80th anniversary of the Polish Resettlement Act of 1947 and the arrival of the first Polish families, this project offers a timely opportunity to reflect on, celebrate, and preserve a vital chapter of both Welsh and Polish history.
