6 WAYS TO WELLBEING
At the Rainbow Foundation, we believe wellbeing is about more than just coping – it’s about feeling connected, valued and able to live with purpose. The Six Ways to Wellbeing are a simple, evidence‑based framework that helps people strengthen their mental and emotional wellbeing through everyday actions.
These six themes underpin much of our work across Rainbow services and are woven into our activities, groups, training and one‑to‑one support. They are not standalone ideas – they are embedded across everything we do.
Connect
Strong relationships are central to wellbeing. At the Rainbow Foundation, connection sits at the heart of our community‑based approach and is reflected across many of our services.
Through our community hubs, wellbeing groups, dementia services, family support and volunteering opportunities, we support people to:
- Build and maintain positive relationships
- Reduce loneliness and social isolation
- Feel heard, valued and included
- Strengthen connections within their local community
Our centres and outreach services provide welcoming, safe spaces where people can connect at their own pace, build trust and feel a genuine sense of belonging.

Take Notice
Taking time to notice the present moment can improve emotional regulation, reduce stress and increase appreciation of everyday experiences. At Rainbow Foundation, this is woven into how we support people across our mental health, dementia, community wellbeing and family services.
We support people to:
- Develop awareness of thoughts, feelings and surroundings through reflective conversations and group activities
- Practice mindfulness and grounding techniques within wellbeing sessions and one‑to‑one support
- Build emotional regulation skills as part of our Mental Health & Positive Behaviour Change work
- Recognise what supports their wellbeing through personalised, strengths‑based approaches
Creating space to pause, reflect and feel heard is a core part of how Rainbow supports meaningful, lasting change.
Keep Learning
Learning helps people build confidence, purpose and resilience, and plays an important role across Rainbow Foundation services.
Through our training programmes, workshops, wellbeing activities, dementia‑friendly learning, lived‑experience groups and one‑to‑one support, we encourage people to:
- Learn new skills that support confidence and independence
- Gain understanding about mental health, dementia, wellbeing and healthy ageing
- Learn from lived experience through peer and group‑based support
- Develop self‑awareness and problem‑solving skills
By creating learning opportunities at every stage of life, we help people feel more empowered, capable and confident in managing their wellbeing.
Give
Giving is a powerful way to strengthen wellbeing, build confidence and create stronger communities. At the Rainbow Foundation, opportunities to give are embedded across our services.
Through volunteering, peer support, community groups and lived‑experience involvement, we support people to:
- Share their time, skills and experience in meaningful ways
- Support others through peer connection and lived‑experience roles
- Contribute to community activity that brings purpose and value
- Feel recognised and valued for what they give
Giving within Rainbow helps people feel useful, connected and part of something bigger.
Care (for the Planet)
Care for the planet is caring for ourselves, our communities and future generations. At the Rainbow Foundation, we recognise that environmental wellbeing and human wellbeing are deeply connected. Feeling connected to nature, protecting shared spaces and acting responsibly all contribute to better mental health, community pride and a sense of purpose.
Through our community activities, wellbeing services, volunteering opportunities and place‑based work, we encourage and support people to:
- Care for local environments and shared community spaces
- Take part in nature‑based, outdoor and sustainability‑focused activities
- Make small, positive changes that support environmental wellbeing
- Build a sense of responsibility, stewardship and connection to place
By promoting care for the planet, we help people reconnect with the natural world, strengthen community ties and develop a shared sense of responsibility for the spaces we live in. This approach supports wellbeing while helping to create healthier, more sustainable communities for everyone.
